FAQ for the TNG Student Media Conference

Do I have to be a student to attend the conference?

No, current enrollment is not necessary.

What are the age limits to attend?

There are no age limits, though the event is geared toward journalism/communications students or recent grads. Freelance journalists and upper-level high school journalism students are also welcome to attend breakout sessions. Everyone and anyone interested in local media is encouraged to attend one of the keynote diversity discussions.

Do I need to have my resume or clips ready to attend?

You do not! We want this to be a relaxed setting so students can concentrate on getting information from real journalists without the pressures of a traditional job fair. We will provide contact emails from participating managers for attendees to send in their information.

I’m a hiring manager leading an editor’s session. Do I have to attend anything else?

Thank you for your time! No other attendance is mandatory, but we strongly encourage session leaders and outlet editors to attend one of the two diversity discussions.

How did you choose the keynote speakers ?

Our esteemed keynote speakers all are either working in Detroit media or spent a large chunk of their careers here. Most importantly, these leaders and experts make specific contributions to diversity work in the industry. (As do many of our event participants!)

How did you choose the session leaders?

We are a Guild committee so we looked to current and former Guild members first and foremost. From there, our team networked to find the best willing participants with a goal of creating a diverse lineup, including younger journalists who already are doing big things! It should be noted that most of our session leaders are qualified to lead multiple sessions.

I’d like my organization to join. Is it too late?

Unfortunately, yes. Our editors sessions are filled. We reached out to as many outlets as possible, but we know we may have missed each other! Please send us a note so we can reach out the next time we host a similar event!

I would love to lead a small session! Is it too late?

Unfortunately, yes. We are at capacity. We reached out to as many folks as possible, but we know we may have missed each other! Please send us a note so we can reach out the next time we host a similar event!

Is this an annual event? Can my organization do anything to help?

We hope this becomes an annual event! We’ve had a great response from Michigan colleges and are honored that so many have reached out. The biggest thing to help us this year is getting the word out and folks signed up. We are keeping a list of those who wish to come back next year. We appreciate the great response!
